Fabio Grosso’s winner and the scream of joy of millions of Azzurri fans marked a legendary night, and one of the most iconic moments in Italy’s sporting history. It is a triumph that will never leave the memories of millions of Italians who that night celebrated in every square and every street across the country, and still today it is the very peak of Italian football this century.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;19 years later, what are the &lt;strong&gt;2006 world champions doing today&lt;/strong&gt;? A lot of them couldn’t resist staying within the sport, in different roles, but embodying the same spirit: eleven of them embraced a managerial career and continue to believe, others have become leaders, other pundits and even Serie A ambassadors. Perhaps the most notable of the Azzurri champions at the moment is Gennaro &lt;strong&gt;Gattuso&lt;/strong&gt;, who after gaining managerial experience in Italy and across Europe, has been named &lt;strong&gt;Italy’s new head coach&lt;/strong&gt;. He has wide experience as a travelling manager which saw him take the lead of top Italian clubs including AC Milan and Napoli (with whom he won the 2020 Coppa Italia), Serie B clubs (Palermo and Pisa), and abroad with teams including Valencia, Olympique Marseille and Hajduk Split. The manager from Calabria then received the call from the Federation, tasking him with &lt;strong&gt;bringing Italy back to the World Cup&lt;/strong&gt;, something that hasn’t been managed in its last two editions. His mission is clear: rebuilding a clear identity, refinding group spirit, pride for the badge as well as providing the determination that took Italy right to the top in 2006.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Besides him is &lt;strong&gt;Gianluigi Buffon&lt;/strong&gt;, an Azzurri legend and a charismatic leader of that winning team. In the past he also guided Frosinone to promotion and he has also gained experience abroad both in Switzerland (Sion) and France (Lyon).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Daniele De Rossi&lt;/strong&gt;, a former warrior of a midfielder, made his Serie A managerial debut with Roma in 2024. As José Mourinho’s successor, he rejuvenated the team and led the Giallorossi to the Europa League semi-finals. He is currently waiting for a new opportunity, but he is still a big name in Italian coaching.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Alberto Gilardino&lt;/strong&gt; chose a similar path, building his way up: after gaining experience in Serie C with Siena and Pro Vercelli, he climbed the ranks at Genoa, first with the Primavera before taking over the first team, earning them promotion and safety in their first year in the top division. His time with Il Grifone came to an end in November 2024, and this summer he has accepted to take charge of &lt;strong&gt;Pisa&lt;/strong&gt;, newly-promoted to Serie A after a 34-year-long wait.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Filippo Inzaghi&lt;/strong&gt; built a managerial career true to his spirit as a player. After beginning with AC Milan, he chose to build up from the bottom, leading Venezia from the Lega Pro to just one step from Serie A. He secured a historical promotion with Benevento, also winning the Serie B. After various experiences with Reggina, Brescia and Salernitana, he brought Pisa back to Serie A before then handing the responsibility over to his ex-teammate Gilardino. In Summer 2025 he accepted the job with &lt;strong&gt;Palermo&lt;/strong&gt;, set on bringing the Rosaneri back to the top division. &lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Andrea Pirlo&lt;/strong&gt;, Italy’s midfield maestro, began his managerial career early on at Juventus, winning the Coppa Italia and the Supercup right away. As a Serie A ambassador, after experiences in Turkey and with Sampdoria in Serie B, he is now awaiting a new job.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;One of the most well-travelled champions is &lt;strong&gt;Fabio Cannavaro&lt;/strong&gt;, captain and 2006 Ballon d’or winner. After his first experiences in China and Saudi Arabia, he returned to Italy to lead Benevento and Udinese, who he managed to save right at the end of the season. He ended the 2024/25 season in charge of Dinamo Zagreb, in Croatia. As a Serie A Ambassador, he took part in the 2025 Serie A Festival as a guest on the “Legendary Player” panel.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;There are also plenty of “smaller” stories, just like in &lt;strong&gt;Marco Amelia’s case&lt;/strong&gt;, who is now in charge of Serie D’s &lt;strong&gt;Sondrio&lt;/strong&gt;, after managing clubs like Prato, Olbia, Lupa Roma and Livorno. Or take &lt;strong&gt;Massimo Oddo &lt;/strong&gt;for example, who is currently &lt;strong&gt;Milan Futuro &lt;/strong&gt;manager, working closely with the club’s brightest young talent.
