&lt;p&gt;We’re counting down to the start of the &lt;strong&gt;EA SPORTS FC Supercup&lt;/strong&gt;, which will take place in Riyadh between 2 and 6 January.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Last year, in the first edition with the new format featuring four teams, &lt;strong&gt;Inter&lt;/strong&gt;, the then-Coppa Italia Frecciarossa holders, emerged victorious over reigning Italian champions &lt;strong&gt;Napoli&lt;/strong&gt; in the final.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For a second consecutive year, the holders of the Coppa Italia thus won the Supercoppa, which goes against the competition’s historical trend: to date, the &lt;strong&gt;reigning Scudetto winners have got their hands on the trophy 66% of the time&lt;/strong&gt; (24 times out of 36).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The trophy has gone to the reigning &lt;strong&gt;Coppa Italia&lt;/strong&gt; champions on ten occasions but only twice to the Coppa Italia runners-up (in 2016 and 2017, when &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;Lazio&lt;/strong&gt; respectively beat &lt;strong&gt;Juventus&lt;/strong&gt;). It would, however, represent a first if, this time around, the team that finished the 2023/24 Serie A season in second place (AC Milan) won the EA SPORTS FC Supercup given that Lazio were eliminated by Inter in the semi-finals last year.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Atalanta&lt;/strong&gt; will become the twelfth club to take part in the competition. The last team to make their debut in the Supercoppa were &lt;strong&gt;Lazio&lt;/strong&gt; in 1998. Juventus are the most successful side in competition history having got their hands on the trophy nine times. Then we have &lt;strong&gt;Inter&lt;/strong&gt; (eight triumphs), who have won the last three editions, and &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt;, who have seven victories to their name.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Last year, all three &lt;strong&gt;EA SPORTS FC Supercup&lt;/strong&gt; matches were decided within 90 minutes: the two semi-finals – Napoli vs. Fiorentina and Inter vs. Lazio – both finished 3-0, with &lt;strong&gt;Lautaro Martinez &lt;/strong&gt;then scoring a 91st-minute winner against the Partenopei in the final to clinch the trophy for Inter.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The final has only been decided on &lt;strong&gt;penalties&lt;/strong&gt; five times; this last occurred when &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt; triumphed over Juventus in 2016. Extra time has been required on eight occasions, with a winner then emerging four times before a penalty shootout. The last time this happened was when &lt;strong&gt;Inter&lt;/strong&gt; beat &lt;strong&gt;Juventus&lt;/strong&gt; at San Siro in 2021.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On an individual level, &lt;strong&gt;Gigi Buffon&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;Dejan Stankovic&lt;/strong&gt; are the record appearance holders in the competition (nine each), and they’re also the two players who have won the trophy the most (seven triumphs for Buffon, six for Stankovic). &lt;strong&gt;Stefan de Vrij&lt;/strong&gt; could close in on this duo having played in six Supercoppa finals and won four of them.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When it comes to all-time top scorers, &lt;strong&gt;Paulo Dybala &lt;/strong&gt;is leading the way with four, followed by &lt;strong&gt;Lautaro Martinez&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Samuel Eto`o&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Alessandro Del Piero&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Carlos Tevez&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;Andrij Shevcenko&lt;/strong&gt; with three.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As for coaches, &lt;strong&gt;Simone Inzaghi&lt;/strong&gt; has been the most successful tactician in competition history (five victories), ahead of &lt;strong&gt;Fabio Capello&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;Marcello Lippi&lt;/strong&gt; with four wins. Should he triumph with Atalanta, &lt;strong&gt;Giampiero Gasperini&lt;/strong&gt;, who turns 67 on 26 January, would become the oldest coach to win the EA SPORTS FC Supercup. In this regard, he’d move ahead of &lt;strong&gt;Vujadin Boškov&lt;/strong&gt;, who was 60 years and 100 days old when he led Sampdoria to victory in 1991.&lt;/p&gt;
