&lt;p&gt;Aiming for a big derby showdown: with &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt; having progressed to the semi-finals yesterday, Inter will take to the San Siro pitch this evening to face Benfica. Going into tonight’s game in front of their home crowd, the Nerazzurri hold a 2-0 advantage thanks to goals from &lt;strong&gt;Barella&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;Lukaku&lt;/strong&gt; in the first leg.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Inter, who previously hadn’t reached the quarters for twelve years, could lose by one goal and still qualify for the semis, a feat they haven’t achieved since 2009/10. That season, of course, Zanetti and Co. went on to lift the trophy in Madrid after getting the better of &lt;strong&gt;Bayern Munich&lt;/strong&gt; in the final. The Nerazzurri would obviously progress with a victory or draw, while the match would go to extra time and perhaps even penalties if they were to lose by two goals.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Meanwhile, the Portuguese side are going through a bit of a bad patch: after dominating their domestic division throughout the season and recording ten consecutive victories, Benfica have lost their last two league games - against &lt;strong&gt;Porto&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;Chaves&lt;/strong&gt; - meaning the &lt;strong&gt;former&lt;/strong&gt; have moved to within four points of them with six games still to go. &lt;strong&gt;Roger Schmidt’s team&lt;/strong&gt; had also remained unbeaten in the Champions League until last week, including in the third qualifying round against &lt;strong&gt;Midtjylland &lt;/strong&gt;and the play-off round against &lt;strong&gt;Dynamo Kyiv&lt;/strong&gt;. Indeed, Benfica have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage five times out of five, including last year against Liverpool. They last made the last four in 1989/90, a season that saw them overcome &lt;strong&gt;Dnipro &lt;/strong&gt;and &lt;strong&gt;Olmpique de Marseille&lt;/strong&gt; before losing the final against AC Milan in Vienna.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Going back even further, Inter and Benfica met at San Siro in the European Cup final in 1965, with &lt;strong&gt;Jair &lt;/strong&gt;scoring the only goal as the Nerazzurri won the competition for the second time in a row. The other two previous encounters date back to the 2003/04 campaign: in the UEFA Cup, &lt;strong&gt;Alberto Zaccheroni’s &lt;/strong&gt;Inter&lt;strong&gt; &lt;/strong&gt;won 4-3 at San Siro after a 0-0 first-leg stalemate before being eliminated by &lt;strong&gt;Olmpique de Marseille &lt;/strong&gt;in the last eight.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This is the only quarter-final tie that doesn’t involve a domestic champion from last season: Inter finished second behind AC Milan in 2021/22, while &lt;strong&gt;Benfica &lt;/strong&gt;came third behind &lt;strong&gt;Porto&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;Sporting Lisbon&lt;/strong&gt;. Only once out of six times have the Portuguese side managed to overcome a first-leg home defeat, while Inter have only been eliminated once on the 18 previous occasions where they’ve won the first leg on the road in a two-legged tie (against &lt;strong&gt;Bayern Munich&lt;/strong&gt; in the 1988/89 UEFA Cup).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In terms of penalties, Inter have won two knockout ties via shootouts - against &lt;strong&gt;Celtic&lt;/strong&gt; in the semi-finals of the 1971/72 European Cup and &lt;strong&gt;Grazer AK &lt;/strong&gt;in the second round of the 1996/97 UEFA Cup - and lost two - against&lt;strong&gt; Aston Villa &lt;/strong&gt;in the first round of the UEFA Cup in 1994/95 and &lt;strong&gt;Schalke 04&lt;/strong&gt; in the final of the same competition in 1996/97.
