&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Riyadh&lt;/strong&gt;, the capital of Saudi Arabia, will once again host the 38th edition of the &lt;strong&gt;EA SPORTS FC Supercup&lt;/strong&gt;, which for the third time in its history will feature four teams: the first- and second-placed sides from last season’s Serie A and the winners and runners-up of the most recent Coppa Italia Frecciarossa: &lt;strong&gt;Napoli, Inter, Bologna and AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;THE FIRST EDITION&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href=&#34;https://www.legaseriea.it/en/supercoppa/albo&#34; data-new-window=&#34;true&#34; target=&#34;_blank&#34; rel=&#34;noopener noreferrer&#34;&gt;The trophy’s story&lt;/a&gt; began in &lt;strong&gt;1988&lt;/strong&gt;, when Sampdoria’s then-president &lt;strong&gt;Paolo&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Mantovani&lt;/strong&gt; proposed to Lega Calcio’s then-president &lt;strong&gt;Luciano Nizzola&lt;/strong&gt;, the creation of a competition between the reigning Italian champions and the Coppa Italia winners.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The inaugural Supercoppa Italiana, in 1988, was played at San Siro in June 1989. The Serie A champions &lt;strong&gt;AC&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Milan&lt;/strong&gt; defeated Coppa Italia holders &lt;strong&gt;Sampdoria&lt;/strong&gt; 3-1 to lift the trophy. Until 2014, the Supercoppa was almost always played in August or during the summer as a prelude to the Serie A season, with two exceptions: the 1989 edition, played in &lt;strong&gt;November&lt;/strong&gt; between &lt;strong&gt;Inter&lt;/strong&gt; (champions) and &lt;strong&gt;Sampdoria&lt;/strong&gt;, and the 1995 edition, when &lt;strong&gt;Juventus&lt;/strong&gt; beat &lt;strong&gt;Parma&lt;/strong&gt; on 17 January.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;A TROPHY ON TOUR&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;From 2014 onwards, the format began to change. Over the last 10 years, the Supercoppa has been played three times in &lt;strong&gt;December&lt;/strong&gt;, five times in &lt;strong&gt;January&lt;/strong&gt;, and twice in &lt;strong&gt;August&lt;/strong&gt;, and predominantly outside of Italy.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The first edition played abroad was in &lt;strong&gt;1993&lt;/strong&gt;, when &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan&lt;/strong&gt; beat &lt;strong&gt;Torino&lt;/strong&gt; at the Robert F. Kennedy Memoral Stadium in &lt;strong&gt;Washington&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;USA&lt;/strong&gt;, marking the beginning of the competition’s international journey to further promote Italian football and Serie A clubs around the world.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In 2002, it took place in &lt;strong&gt;Tripoli&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Libya&lt;/strong&gt;, where &lt;strong&gt;Juventus&lt;/strong&gt; defeated &lt;strong&gt;Parma&lt;/strong&gt;. The following year saw a return to the United States, with Juventus defeating AC Milan at the &lt;strong&gt;New York Giants Stadium&lt;/strong&gt; in New Jersey. The 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015 editions were held in &lt;strong&gt;China&lt;/strong&gt;, in &lt;strong&gt;Beijing&lt;/strong&gt; and &lt;strong&gt;Shanghai&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;SAUDI ARABIA&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;After editions played in &lt;strong&gt;Doha&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;Qatar&lt;/strong&gt;, in 2014 and 2016, the Supercoppa arrived in &lt;strong&gt;Saudi&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Arabia&lt;/strong&gt;. On 16 January 2019, &lt;strong&gt;Juventus&lt;/strong&gt; beat &lt;strong&gt;AC&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Milan&lt;/strong&gt; at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in &lt;strong&gt;Jeddah&lt;/strong&gt;, the first year to feature VAR, which had been introduced in Serie A the previous season.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Later that year, on 22 December, &lt;strong&gt;Lazio&lt;/strong&gt; defeated &lt;strong&gt;Juventus&lt;/strong&gt; at the &lt;strong&gt;King Saud University Stadium&lt;/strong&gt; in &lt;strong&gt;Riyadh&lt;/strong&gt;. In 2022, the competition returned to the Saudi capital, this time at the King Fahd International Stadium, where &lt;strong&gt;Inter&lt;/strong&gt; lifted the trophy with a 3-0 derby win over &lt;strong&gt;AC Milan.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;More recent history includes &lt;strong&gt;Inter’s&lt;/strong&gt; triumph two years ago, followed by &lt;strong&gt;AC&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Milan’s&lt;/strong&gt; victory last season, once again in a final against the Nerazzurri. That edition marked the 14th Supercoppa played outside Italy, the fifth in &lt;strong&gt;Saudi&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Arabia&lt;/strong&gt; and the fourth consecutive one in &lt;strong&gt;Riyadh&lt;/strong&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In just a few days, the Hall of Fame and the statistics will be updated once more.
