5 ROMA VS. INTER CLASHES AT THE OLIMPICO
On Sunday, the Giallorossi will want to buck a negative trend in home matches against the Nerazzurri. Let’s review five past meetings between the sides
Roma vs. Inter is a highly prestigious fixture and the most played game in Serie A history (alongside Juventus vs. Inter). In terms of goals, it’s also the most fruitful with 530 scored across 182 matches, an average of 2.9 per game. In the capital, Roma have recorded 34 wins compared to the Nerazzurri’s 31, with 26 draws completing the picture.
In recent years, the Giallorossi have struggled against the Nerazzurri. Roma have lost six of the last eight meetings between the sides in the Italian top flight and haven’t won at home for seven games straight, losing the last three. Inter have managed to score at least twice in each of their last seven games away in the capital, a record-breaking run at the Olimpico in Serie A.
Roma 4-2 Inter, Matchday 13 2014/15
Rudi Garcia’s Roma were engaged in a head-to-head battle with Juventus for top spot in the standings. Inter, meanwhile, were coming off the back of a draw in the derby, Mancini’s first game back in charge following Mazzarri’s departure.
The Giallorossi started quickly with Gervinho being found by Ljajić for an easy tap-in, but the visitors equalised through a Ranocchia header. The second half also got off to a flying start as José Holebas scored a brilliant goal: the Greek full-back dribbled past Campagnaro and Ranocchia before unleashing a rocket into the top corner. Osvaldo came close with an excellent scissor-kick, but the Argentine forward was destined to score a few minutes later instead with a shot that went in off Astori. In the final minutes, Miralem Pjanić took centre stage: the Bosnian bagged from an assist by Totti and then, in injury time, put the game to bed with a masterful free-kick. Roma, who were harbouring Scudetto ambitions, thus triumphed in the rain,
Roma 2-1 Inter, Matchday 7 2016/17
Led by Spalletti, the Giallorossi took on Frank De Boer’s Inter, who were one point ahead of them in the table. The hosts took the visitors by surprise with a very fast start, going ahead in the fifth minute thanks to Džeko’s finish from Bruno Peres’s low cross. The clash was entertaining with chances at both ends, and both Handanovič and Szczesny were in fine form between the sticks. Banega struck the post with a fantastic effort but then had another go in the second half, making it 1-1 following some lovely footwork. However, the Nerazzurri weren’t level for long: Pjanić sent in a free-kick for Manolas, who headed home the winner in the 76th minute. Roma moved up to second, while Inter dropped to eleventh.
Roma 1-3 Inter, Matchday 2 2017/18
Di Francesco’s first home game as Roma coach coincided with Spalletti’s return to the Olimpico after bidding farewell the previous season. The Giallorossi had opened their season with a narrow win in Bergamo and the Nerazzurri with a comfortable victory over Fiorentina.
The hosts made a very fast start: after Kolarov had hit the post, Džeko opened the scoring with a fine finish from a perfect Nainggolan assist. Roma’s domination continued for the rest of the first half, and they came inches away from doubling their advantage as ‘The Ninja’ struck the post. The second half kicked off and Di Francesco’s men hit the woodwork for the third time, with Diego Perotti going very close from distance. It was then time for Icardi to take centre stage with some ruthless finishing. On two occasions, the Nerazzurri No.9 turned and fired home from inside the box, with Candreva and Perišić providing the assists. Vecino then found the net after another ball in from the Croatian as Inter stormed back to win.
Roma 2-2 Inter, Matchday 14 2018/19
The following season, under the same coaches, the two teams met with Inter holding a nine-point advantage over Roma.
Florenzi hit the post after being set up by a back heel from Schick, and Inter then took the lead: Joao Mario played the ball out wide for D`Ambrosio, whose cross was converted by Keita Baldé. In the second half, Roma equalised through a fantastic long-range strike from Ünder, but Icardi quickly restored Inter’s advantage from a corner. Roma didn’t give up and scored another leveller: Kolarov was the man to get it, converting from the penalty spot after a handball in the box. It was the first of three consecutive 2-2 draws between the two teams at the Olimpico.
Roma 0-3 Inter, Matchday 16 2021/22
In December 2021, José Mourinho came up against his former side, Inter, for the first time. Under Simone Inzaghi, the Nerazzurri found themselves in a close battle with Napoli and AC Milan at the top. It turned out to be a night to forget for the Portuguese coach.
That evening, Inter were unstoppable and took a 15th-minute lead through Çalhanoğlu, who scored straight from a corner. Džeko doubled the Nerazzurri’s advantage following a fantastic team move, after which Bastoni set up Dumfries for a diving header in the closing stages of the first half. It was the Dutchman’s first goal in an Inter shirt.
The Nerazzurri moved above Napoli in the table and remained a point behind table-topping AC Milan, while Roma slipped to seventh.
